Take a number when you walk in the door, and then take a moment to catch your breath. It’s going to take you a second to realize you’re not Candyland. Even though the torta de manzana, a baked apple cake stacked two inches high, doesn’t look as appetizing as all the creamy decorated chocolate cakes, it’s one of my favorites in the entire city. The help is friendly, but don’t expect a lot of English-speakers in this neighborhood. Avoid the weekends (when there’s a lot of hustle and bustle) if you want the staff to devote a little extra time to understanding your Spanish and helping you choose.
