Franklin Fountain

A step-back-in-time ice cream parlor with homemade waffles and desserts

This first came into my consciousness in the October 2009 issue of Saveur, but you might be familiar with the spot from “Man v. Food” on the Travel Channel. Host Adam Richman took on Franklin Fountain’s waffle ice cream sandwich: Three waffles sandwiching two slabs of handmade, homemade ice cream. The ice cream is the creamiest I’ve tasted — and trust me, I’ve tried a lot of ice cream — and the flavors are authentic. (The cinnamon ice cream was thoroughly flecked with bits of the spice.)

The decor itself would be worth the visit, too, with old-fashioned bar stools, tables and decorations — the staff even dresses accordingly. It’s not the cheapest dessert fix around, but it’s well worth the money. Plus, it’s super close to some of Philly’s best historic attractions, so just add it to the itinerary!
